Scrapbooking the Grown-Up Side of Summer

Scrapbooking the Grown-Up Side of Summer

Let’s be honest: if summer was a movie, most of us grown-ups would be listed in the credits as “mom with sunscreen” or “grill dad #3.” We’re the ones who pack the beach bags, remember the bug spray, refill the ice trays, and magically know where everyone’s flip-flops are — and yet, when we look back through our camera rolls?

Crickets. Or worse — the corner of our elbow in a poolside selfie.

It’s time to fix that. Because while we’re documenting the splash fights, popsicle drips, and sandcastles, we’re also living through golden-hour chats, spontaneous dance parties, and those rare five minutes with both a cold drink and a warm breeze. The grown-up side of summer is real, and it’s so worth remembering.

First things first: Get in the photo.

Repeat after me: I was there too. That means flipping the camera around, handing it off, setting a timer, or — gasp — using the dang self-timer. You don’t need perfect lighting or makeup. You need proof. You made the summer magic happen. Own it.

Pro tip: Tell your partner or your kids, “Hey — make sure you get one of me today.” Say it with confidence. Say it like it’s just what we do now. Because it is.

Grown-Up Summer Story Sparks (That Deserve a Page)

  • The Setup MVP
Who organizes the cooler? Packs the chairs? Finds the one shady spot in a parking lot full of sun? That logistical ballet deserves its own layout. Snap the behind-the-scenes prep, the grocery hauls, the inflatable-unrolling chaos. Journal the real talk: who’s the planner, who forgets the matches, and who always thinks they packed enough towels (but didn’t).
  • Golden Hour Conversations
Those mellow moments at dusk — maybe you’re watching the kids from the porch, maybe you’re catching up with a friend, maybe you’re quietly people-watching while your drink sweats on the table. These are memory gold. Capture the light, the setting, and what was on your mind. Write it down like a snapshot of your internal monologue.
  • The “We Still Got It” Night
You stayed up too late. You sang too loud. You laughed so hard you forgot to check your phone. Whether it was a date night, a girls’ night, or a spontaneous deck party, scrap the proof that fun didn’t retire after 30. Include the blurry pics, the questionable snack choices, and the playlist you nailed.
  • Solo Summer Magic
Sometimes it’s just you and the garden hose. Or a book. Or an iced coffee and a lawn chair while the kids are finally playing nicely. These quiet moments are underrated and under-documented. Snap the view from your chair. Write a few lines about what made you pause. Spoiler: it’s always the small stuff.
  • Summer Survival Wins
Did you survive a week of camp drop-offs without losing your mind? Navigate a family BBQ without losing your cool? Successfully host a gathering and clean up before midnight? These are the real MVP moments of summer. Capture the chaos, the calm, the chaos again. Honor your hustle.

You’re not just the photographer. You’re not just the lunch-packer, sunscreen-applier, or pool-bag sherpa. You’re living these summers too — building memories, soaking up fleeting moments, making the magic happen. Your story matters, and it’s time your scrapbook showed that.

So go ahead. Step out from behind the camera. Snap the solo cup in your hand. Document the playlist you crushed. Write down the thoughts that popped up during that golden hour glow. The grown-up side of summer isn’t background noise — it’s the heart of it all.

So here’s your permission slip: get in the frame, tell your story, and scrapbook the good stuff that’s usually left out. Because summer isn’t just about the perfect family photo — it’s about the grown-up side too. The deck hangs. The messy prep. The nights that ran long and the mornings that required strong coffee. If you’ve ever raised a glass while raising kids, if you’ve danced barefoot with zero regrets, if you’ve found joy in the chaos — there’s a story worth telling.

  1. If all you do is turn the camera on yourself once in awhile- and DO NOT DELETE those less than perfect selfies- you’ll be so happy you did! Or- hand the phone over and have kiddos take picture of YOU! – the secret is- you have to actively take a photo- (no one gives it to you- lol!) ❤

  2. So true and really inspiring. I know I should do that but as a solo mom I have to find ways of being in the pictures lol. I love all the great advices you share and the way you remind us we are here’s!:)
