I Don’t Have to be Happy

joy-1
The other day I was talking with some one I am rather close with but haven’t seen in awhile and they asked what I was up to. I gave them the highlights of the boys recent milestones- and then went on to talk about how I was enjoying work. They asked what I was doing and I explained a bit about ForeverJoy- and they cut me off and said the name slowly, with a raised eyebrow: ” ‘Forever Joy’ ?- that’s the name of this thing you do? Like that’s even possible- and from you, a die hard cynic!” It took a little to ignore the reference to my work dismissed as a “thing” – but I’m done with trying to justify myself to people who really can’t understand- but the part about joy- and how a tough Brooklyn Girl like me couldn’t possibly have it- well, that got me thinking.

Now, by no means am I a Pollyanna- and I don’t know if I would describe myself as “happy” all the time. This morning, after a marathon bout of designing I opened my eyes to the shambles of a house untended to for 3 days and inhabited by 3 males- and no, I was not happy. I have a stack of bills to tackle- and chores to do and a house so cold that I work with a down vest on- and I’m not skipping-to-my-Lou over these things- but I would say, without a doubt- even at this moment I am a cranky, overburdened, cold, joyful person.

Β As I see it, that’s how joy works.

It’s not the same as happy. JD Salinger once said “the most singular difference between happiness and joy is that happiness is a solid and joy is a liquid.” An event or thought can make you happy, its here and then it passes- a wave that washes upon your daily shoreline. But, the contentment and appreciation and recognition of the beauty of the shoreline, that is joy.

So, while the tide is pretty low this morning with all the to-dos and what not’s- I may not be happy- but I am joyful. That’s the perspective I always try to keep- it is my true north. Β And ain’t no one is going to disbelieve it away from me- I’m holding on tight and I will choose it each and every day.

Thanks so much for this thoughtful reminder, Renne, as I needed it :). I wholeheartedly agree that one needs not be a Pollyanna to be joyful and that in spite of what's going on in our lives we can still be filled with joy. Too bad a lot of people won't get it, but most people don't get our creative endeavors anyway and it doesn't matter to me. I'm happily dancing to my own beat…..

LOL, I had a vest on this morning while I designed, too. Over my nightgown. Thanks for the reminder that joy is important (and that a sense of humor helps).

Julie- that's SO funny! It must be the designer uniform these days- sometimes I have a hot cup of coffee on my desk just to warm my fingers πŸ˜‰
