I was at the park the other day with the boys- and saw a mom trying to get her two little ones together for a picture. She had them dressed rather nicely for the park- so I am thinking this was a planned outing. The little girl posed in a perfect way- sweet smile, head tilt and all. The little boy though, was a pure stinker. he would squirm, make funny faces and then, towards the end, would just bolt off the moment the mom raised the camera to her eye. Each time, she would put the camera down, chase him, give him a scold and make him promise to stay still GOSH DARN IT! Of course he didn’t. She stuffed the camera back into her tote bag with a frustrated push and called it a day.
Yep. I don’t know- maybe it’s just me- but this one just makes me crack up! Liam is 5 now, and looking over my shoulder he is right now asking- “Mommmm- did you even pick me up?” Yes baby, right after I clicked it. Priorities of a momarazzi you know!
These are AWESOME memories! I am cracking up thinking of him imitating that gasping frog! π
And I'm like you letting my little one publicly shame me with his fashion choices. This summer, be became a fan of wearing his snow boots with his shorts "because they were comfy" LOL! with black knee socks. He also would squeeze himself into a shirt from 2 years ago b/c it was his favorite. yipes! It was painful to watch! On special occasions- yes- I'll layout the clothes- but for the everyday, I'll let him choose- snap the shots and file them under "B" for blackmail! π

Oh, i agree with you where children's photos are concerned. One of my favorites of my son when he was 6 y/o is when we were camping in the mountains and he found a frog and carried it around with him that last day of our camp-out. When we got ready to leave, i told him to put the frog back in the stream, and he said, "But, Mom! He likes me and I named him Johnathan! See, he's going like this.." (and he demonstrated that poor frog gasping for water!) i said, "He's going like that because he needs to get back in the water." My little guy did as he was told, but the tears were just streaming down his face – it was a perfect photo-op, and i LOVE that photo of him! It brings back that camping trip like no scenic photo ever could do. The other photo i love of him was when he was 4 and loved to dress himself. His favorite outfit was his burgundy jeans, a gold shirt, bright blue socks, and his BLACK shoes! i snapped his photo in this outfit, and the smile on his face is priceless. He was so proud! Other mothers would tell me i needed to help him "match up" his outfits, but, i didn't care, actually (except on special occasions when i DID lay out what i wanted him to wear). Well, He's 42 y/o now and he does a good job of "matching" his clothing. Let kids be kids, and capture those moments!

I love this articel!!! I too believe that the candid shots are sometimes the best. Yes it may take 20 to get one "good" shot, but i always find "great" shots in the other 19! Thanks for pointing it out. I love the caption, "the one that got away" I will be scraplifting that quote if its OK with you!! I have a 19 month old grandson it fits PERFECTLY!!! LOL Thanks for the article!!
